Mac OSX Leopard: How to switch between languages
Using hotkeys, that is. By default the hotkeys for toggling the language input is set as Command+Space. But since Spotlight’s default hotkey is also set as Command+Space, that leaves the language-togglin’ hotkey essentialyl disabled. We need to go into system preferences and change that.

Nice screencast, Rick. I noticed that the default hot-key for language switching was not a good choice just a few weeks after switching to using a mac about 2 years back, and changed it in the system prefs just as u show.
but, in order not to conflict with ANY app, i ended up going for a 3-key combo (Shift-Command-X). forgot about using “ctrl”, so that was a good idea. i’ll try change it now, to your more efficient 2-key combo!

Yeah, it was especially a pain switching between hiragana and katakana for japanese language input. It’s not entirely obvious how to set the hotkeys in the OS either (or at least, I had overlooked it for quite some time).
As for the screencast, it’s made with Snapz. Lovely little program.

To the person above: you can type katakana when in hiragana mode by pressing shift. Then everything you type will come out in katakana.

What worked for me was that I made the input menu cmd+space and the spotlight ctrl+Z

Ummmmmmm. How come my menu that comes up in System Preferences doesn’t HAVE an “International” icon. The closest I had was “Language & Text.” But its menus once I clicked on that also didn’t match, so I’m guessing something has …. changed?
Is there, perhaps, a more Stone Age way to temporarily switch to Katakana?
